Busting Black Friday Myths

Posted: Updated:

Black Friday is one week away, but some shoppers already are camping out now.

Some have set up tents at Best Buy stores in Florida and Texas -- a full 10 to 12 days early.

But before you spend your nights camping outside, we're going to dispel some common Black Friday shopping myths.

This year, according to Lindsay Sakraida, with dealnews.com, it's a myth that Black Friday deals are so good, they're worth camping out for.

"Occasionally we do see these ads and sometimes there may be something in these stores that we aren't aware of because we deal with online deals, but a lot of times looking at the ads, we end up seeing similar offers online," said Lindsay Sakraida, Features Director at dealnews.com.

For example, Target last year offered its in-store door busters online as well, with an online coupon to boot, making it even a better deal.

Another myth: Black Friday sales begin on Black Friday.

"It's becoming more obvious that the deals are starting earlier. But then again, they start even before then online, you know. You see some really great deals, especially on Amazon, from the beginning of the day. So, it definitely starts on Thanksgiving itself," said Sakraida.

Used to be, those special ads didn't appear until the day before Black Friday. Now, numerous Black Friday ads have been "leaked"  onto the Internet since the beginning of November, but you'll have to go to their Facebook page to see it.

"There's a lot of talk whether they're leaked strategically, you know, to get people excited about the upcoming deals. So that wouldn't surprise me. It's a very clever marketing tactic," Sakraida said.

And another myth: nobody will beat Black Friday prices.

Dealnews will be putting out a list of stores that offer price-matching on Black Friday.

So, let the hunt begin!
