Generation Next would not be possible without the work of its panel of judges.

Each year, five previous Generation Next recipients are charged with the difficult duty of selecting 40 people out of stacks of nomination forms.

This year was no different. Many people were nominated for Generation Next's class of 2012, and it was up to judges to choose the honorees. While members of The State Journal staff served as facilitators during the judging to answer questions, the judges made the final selections.

"The State Journal cannot thank its judges enough for the time, patience and care they dedicated to helping select this year's class," said Vonda Matthews, sales coordinator for The State Journal.

"Trying to select 40 people to honor with this award is no easy task. All of the people nominated this year showed deep dedication to the state of West Virginia, their careers and their families. They give back to their community and share the goal of making the Mountain State the best it can be."

This year's judges were:

  • Paul Daugherty of Morgantown. Daugherty is the president of West Virginia Grantmakers and a member of the class of 2009.
  • Gene Canter of Charleston. Canter is the vice president of sales and marketing for Coventry Health Care and a member of the class of 2007.
  • John Casey of Ripley. Casey is operations manager of Fox Engineering, owner of Casey Construction and member of the class of 2008
  • Sean Mayberry of Hurricane. Mayberry is portfolio manager for Lanham O'Dell & Co. and is a member of the class of 2008.
  • Duane Ruggier of Charleston. Ruggier is an attorney with Pullin, Fowler, Flanagan Brown & Poe PLLC and is a member of the class of 2007.
