Governor Tomblin orders flags lowered Sunday to honor firefighters

Posted: Updated:

In concurrence with a presidential proclamation, Governor Earl Ray Tomblin is ordering all state and U.S. flags be displayed at half-staff for the entire day of Sunday, October 7 in honor of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service.

In a press release, the governor says he encourages all West Virginians to take precautions, check functionality of home smoke detectors, and develop and practice a family fire escape plan.

The National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service is observed each year during Fire Prevention Week which runs October 7 through 13 this year.

While honoring the dedicated firefighters and other first responders, this year's fire prevention observance encourages all Americans to take meaningful steps to reduce the risk of fire in our homes.
