A Dunbar man has been arrested and charged with the brutal beating and kidnapping of a paralyzed man last week.
Cody Ray Taylor, 22, has been charged with kidnapping, armed robbery, and assault.
Taylor has a criminal history that dates back to 2007 but these are his most serious charges to date.
Ralph Gillenwater is the victim in this case. He said he can sleep a little bit easier knowing that Taylor is behind bars.
Gillenwater is paralyzed from the waist down.
Last week, he said he was at the Go-Mart gas station on 16th Street in Dunbar when his electric wheelchair stopped working
Taylor offered to push him home to his house on 18th Street, Gillenwater said.
Instead, Taylor took him to his grandmother's house on 17th Street.
Gillenwater said Taylor picked him up out of his wheelchair and took him inside, where he robbed and beat him.
"As soon as he set me down he plowed me, he raised back and bam!" he said.
Gillenwater suffered a dislocated jaw, bruised face, and the fear that Taylor would make good on his promise to hurt his family if he squealed to police.
He said he gave up his cash and medication, but that didn't stop Taylor and his rage-filled attack on someone in a wheelchair.
"He is such a wussie that he picks people like me that cannot defend themselves."
Gillenwater has been in a wheelchair for three years and has never had anyone take advantage of him and his situation.
He said he hopes Taylor will spend a long time in jail to think about what he did.
Taylor is currently lodged in the South Central Regional Jail without bail. He will stay there until his next court hearing.
