Christmas is still several weeks away but for agencies that provide toys to less fortunate families it is already late in the season.
Many families say they still need some help stocking Santa's sleigh this Christmas.
Some area groups that provide toys to children during the holidays have been taking applications for help since early September.
That means most deadlines have come and gone.
The United Way of Central West Virginia has a Christmas Bureau made up of nearly 30 groups. Applicants are referred to one of those groups based on their zip code. There are similar services available in other parts of the state.
Groups like the Secret Santa Foundation say the deadlines may seem early but they are necessary.
"We do the early deadline so that we can get everything put together and make sure the kids are properly sponsored," said Secret Santa President, Jennifer Kay.
Toys for Tots is still accepting application through Wednesday. The applications have to be filled out through the group's website. If you live in the Charleston area and have question about Toys for Tots you can call 304-776-4806 ext. 202.
Some smaller local groups are also still taking requests. Just check with them directly or contact the United Way if you live in Kanawha or surrounding counties. The number is 304-414-4405.
If you want to plan ahead for next year, the United Way provides a calendar outlining the participating agencies and their deadlines.
The Secret Santa Foundation still needs sponsors for over 200 children. If you would like to sponsor a child or a family call 304-344-TOYS.
The Mountain Mission is still taking applications for Christmas food baskets. To find out more about that program call 304-344-3407.
