Mike D'Antoni's father reacts to son being named new L.A. Lakers coach
On Monday, Mullens, WV native and Marshall alum Mike D'Antoni was named the new head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.
On Wednesday night, Mike's father, Lewis, was asked by 13 Sports about his son heading west to coach the Lakers.
"When his [Mike] name come up with Jackson's, I didn't think he'd get it," the 98-year-old Lewis D'Antoni said. "Because Jackson has won many championships out there, so I thought surely he'd get it, but I think he wanted too much. And Mike was ready to take a job if it he was offered to him."
The elder D'Antoni was honored for his lifetime legacy of teaching, coaching and mentoring youth in West Virginia.
Lewis will turn 99 years old next month.
As for his son, Mike beat out legendary coach Phil Jackson for the Lakers job and signed a three-year deal worth $12 million with a club option in the fourth year.
Mike recently had knee replacement surgery and will not return to the sidelines for a couple of weeks.
