West Virginia Board of Education re-votes to fire Marple

Posted: Updated:

West Virginia Board of Education has re-voted to remove Dr. Jorea Marple from her post as state school superintendent.

The board re-voted 6 to 2 in an executive session on November 29, citing poor student achievement, lack of urgency to fix problems, and "excuses not actions."

Board members Gayle Manchin, William White, Lloyd Jackson, Bob Dunlevy, Wade Linger, and Michael Green voted in favor of the change; Priscilla Haden and Jenny Phillips were against.

Haden and Phillips were the two board members who, after Dr. Marple's firing earlier this month, announced their resignation effective Dec. 31.

The board has delayed their discussion the hiring of a new superintendent to next month. Chuck Heinlein has been appointed in the interim.

Shortly before the executive session, board President Wade Linger requested the presence of five Capitol police officers.

Today's board meeting comes after questions of whether the firing of Marple earlier this month was done in compliance with the state's open meetings law.
