The Ironton-Russell Bridge was re-opened around noon on Dec. 31.
A barge struck the Ironton-Russell Bridge at approximately 9:45 p.m. Saturday, according to Greenup County 911 dispatchers.
No one was injured in the collision, said Petty Officer Rochus with the United States Coast Guard.
Motorists were detoured via the Ashland, Ky., twin bridges.
The empty coal barge belongs to Superior Marine out of South Point, Ohio.
Rochus said strong winds may have caused the accident, but the details are still under investigation.
"We take this precaution any time any barges or boats hit any bridge," Rochus said.
The Ohio Department of Transportation will meet with engineers and bridge inspectors on Monday, according to spokesperson Kathleen Fuller.
