People reflect on Sen. Rockefeller's legacy

Posted: Updated:

13NEWS spoke with people in our region to see what they'll remember most about Senator Jay Rockefeller.

Some of the most controversial issues he's associated with include violence on television, the Iraq War, or the use of torture for prisoners.

But people we spoke to said his legacy is highlighted by his positions on coal, veterans and health care.

"Other than seeing his name on buildings everywhere, I think his biggest legacy is coal," said Al Lynch.

"As a veteran, I'm going to say he pushed health care issues and benefits for veterans," said Glen Jackson.

Several people also mentioned a blunder Rockefeller made more than thirty years ago.

On the day Rockefeller had just been sworn in as governor of West Virginia in 1977, it was so cold, the Ohio and Kanawha rivers froze over.

Rockefeller warned people to brace for a blizzard, sending thousands across the Mountain State into a frenzy. But Charleston only saw an inch of snow in what came to be known as the Rockefeller Blizzard.
