UPDATE: I-77 now OPEN on the WV Turnpike near WV and VA border

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE @ 10:14

Traffic is now being allowed to head south of Princeton on I-77. While the road is now open, motorists should expect delays and use caution as roads may be icy.

I-77 South between the West Virginia line and the Big Walker Mountain Tunnel has been cleared. Traffic has been released at the East River Mountain Tunnel and is now flowing south out of West Virginia. The queue in West Virginia will take time to clear but is in motion.

UDATE @ 9:22AM

WVDOT:  We're being told that I-77 South in Virginia should be cleared approx. 11 a.m.  For now, WV southbound traffic must get off at Princeton (Exit 9).

Due to a series of accidents in Virginia, traffic has backed up on the West Virginia Turnpike (I-77) for approximately 9 miles.

The Virginia tunnel at the West Virginia state line will be shutdown periodically through the night to allow Virginia crews to clear the accident scenes.

Drivers are asked to avoid traveling on I-77 South into Virginia.

WVDOH and WV Turnpike have message boards from WV/VA State line to Charleston on I-64 and Mink Shoals on I-79 advising of road closure on I-77 South in Virginia.

DOT Emergency Operations is sending WVDOH crews to start turning traffic around and to inform motorists stalled in traffic of the situation. Toll booths operators are also informing motorists of the closure.

WV Homeland Security has been advised and the Transportation Management Center and Parkways Authority are monitoring the situation.
