Athens County Sheriff's deputies say two men called 911 after they noticed a vehicle approximately 300 feet over the embankment on Coal Run Road. One of the men had seen a social media posting about a stolen car and thought this might be it.
After checking the license plates, they confirmed it was the stolen vehicle.
Deputies report "the vehicle key was still in the ignition, the vehicle was in gear, and a sludge hammer was pressed against the gas pedal, which led to the vehicle going over the embankment."
Deputies were able to retrieve prints from the vehicle and an investigation is underway.
