Division of Natural Resources looks into wandering water buffalo in Jackson County, WV
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - State agriculture officials are looking into reports that water buffalo have been spotted wandering around Jackson County.
Residents in the Evans area who indicated they saw the animals have sought help from law enforcement and the state Division of Natural Resources, but officials were unsure who had jurisdiction in the case. Department of Agriculture spokesman Buddy Davidson says his department will investigate the sightings.
Davidson says officials will try to figure out who the animals belong to and what the agency can do about them.
Water buffalo are native to Southeast Asia. The Charleston Daily Mail reports that West Virginia law is vague about the handling of non-native and exotic animal species.
