Livestock need protection when temperatures drop

Posted: Updated:

During the cold winter months we are often reminded to look out for our dogs and cats. But larger animals also need extra care when temperatures drop.

Livestock must have access to fresh drinking water. That means they should have a heated water bucket or their water should be emptied and changed several times a day.

Sarah Stephenson, a veterinarian and owner of Good Shepherd Veterinary Hospital says large animals should have a way to get in out of the wind and cold. They should also be provided with fresh dry bedding.

Many horse owners also choose to put blankets on their horses during extreme cold. But it is crucial that the blankets fit properly to avoid injury.
