An elderly woman is battling serious injuries after Kanawha County deputies said someone broke into her home on Church Road in Pinch and ransacked her house.

"I feel sorry for people like that," said Thomas Hitchcock, who lives near the victim's home in Pinch. "Whatever happened to her, she didn't deserve it...They may have been keeping an eye on her and just found the right time to go in there."

Deputies said it happened around 3 p.m. on Thursday.

A family member found the 74-year-old woman unresponsive on the ground inside her home.

She was then rushed to Charleston Area Medical Center with serious injuries.

But Thursday's incident is more than just what happened to one woman in one house. It gives an entire neighborhood reason to lock their doors.

"All my doors will remain locked," said Hitchcock's daughter, Holly Curry, of Pinch. "Always."

Curry moved into her house less than a week ago, just yards away from the crime scene.

"I don't know if it's my safety I'm concerned about. It's my children because there's times they're here by themselves and I don't want anything like that to happen," Curry said.

Hitchcock has lived in the area since 1959. He said the times have truly changed and the number of violent crimes have risen.

"It's not just Pinch and Elkview. It's not safe anywhere anymore," Hitchcock said.

At this time deputies are still searching for a suspect.
