Animal shelter officials say dog tax can help reunite lost pets with their owners
You may be paying a tax that most people don't even know about and it may mean the difference between getting your pet back or saying goodbye if it's lost.
Cabell County, like many counties in West Virginia, has had a dog tax since 1951. If you live in the county, it's $3 annually. For those who live within the city limits of Huntington, it's $4 each year.
While the tax may seem tedious, officials at the Cabell Wayne Animal Shelter offer up that it can help you find your furry friend quickly. "If a dog is not micro-chipped or there's not a good photographic record of the dog, it would at least give us the ability to go back and look for it in the tax records," said Jim Cumm, director of the Cabell Wayne Animal Shelter.
Once the tax is paid, you're given dog tags with an identifying number, which the county can use to help find locate you, if your pet is lost.
