ELKHORN CITY, Ky. (AP) - Officials in Elkhorn City have given final approval to a proposal to ban smoking in public places in the eastern Kentucky city.
WYMT-TV (bit.ly/10mP9yi) reports the City Council in the Pike County community passed the second and final reading of the ordinance on Thursday night in a 6-0 vote.
In addition to prohibiting smoking at indoor places, the ordinance would not allow people to light up in outdoor arenas or stadiums or within a "reasonable distance" of the entrance to a public building. Violators can be fined up to $50 for a first offense.
City County member Roxanne Blankenship says people elected her " to make the right decisions for the community" so she voted for the measure.
Officials say they will start enforcing the ban in April.
