A Texas doctor who formerly practiced in Logan County recently was charged in connection with a Logan County pill mill, U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin recently announced.

Fernando Gonzales Ramos, 55, of El Paso, Tex., was charged in an April 1 information with conspiracy to distribute and dispense controlled substances without a legitimate medical purpose and outside the usual course of professional practice, the news release states.

Federal prosecutors say from December 2012 through March 2013, Gonzales-Ramos dispensed controlled substances to people without a legitimate medical purpose.

In March, an individual cooperating with law enforcement entered the building Gonzales-Ramos used to distribute narcotics and paid $450 in cash in exchange for a prescription for hydrocodone.

Law enforcement discovered the building did not have an examination table or basic medical equipment such as a stethoscope, blood pressure cuff or scales. There also was no running water in the building, the news release states.

Federal prosecutors additionally say employees working in the building were an armed security guard, a bodyguard carrying brass knuckles and a nurse/receptionist.

"As alleged, this doctor's criminal conduct is shocking," Goodwin said in the release. "He ran a phony medical practice that was really nothing more than a drug den. It's appalling that a licensed physician would pump illegal pills into our communities like this."
