Hundreds showed up for the viewing of Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum at Mingo Central High School.
The mood was somber, as family, friends and law enforcement from around West Virginia made their way into the school.
"He was the first good sheriff we've had in a long time," said family friend Johnny Adkins.
Crum was honored Saturday by sheriffs from surrounding counties, and the mayor of his hometown of Delbarton. It was 13 years ago that Mayor John Preece hired Crum as his town's police chief.
"He wanted to be our police chief, so we hired him, and it was the best thing we ever did," says Mayor Preece.
Crum was sheriff for short of three months before his death. Community members praised him for being fair, responsible and for cracking down on the drug trade which has hurt the county in recent years.
Sheriff Crum's funeral is scheduled for Sunday, also at Mingo Central High School.
