One man is in jail following a major shots fired incident in Mason County.

Point Pleasant police officers were target shooting at a range off of Jericho Road just after 10 p.m.

The officers were doing nighttime qualifications.

Investigators said that's when Richard Allen Thomas, 58, started shooting erratically at them.

Thomas lives near the shooting range.

The Mason County Sheriff's Department and West Virginia State Police quickly responded to the scene.

Officers were able to get out of harms way, but a few of the police cruises were damaged.

There was some initial confusion where the shots were actually coming from.  Officers ducked for cover once they realized the noises were not coming from their weapons.

Jericho road was shut down for a short time but has since reopened.

Investigators said Thomas could have seriously injured or killed someone because of his violent behavior.

"Anytime you get a call where there's another officer is in trouble, you know, the guys come out of the woodwork to try and look after each other," said Mason County Sheriff Greg Powers.

Thomas has been charged with 90 counts of wanton endangerment with a firearm.

He is in the Western Regional Jail.
