In its first charity sale of the year, Belk Inc raised more than $5.3 million for nearly 8,000 nonprofits in its 16-state footprint, the company recently announced in a news release.

The company said its April 27 four-hour semi annual shopping event was an "excellent fundraising tool" for participating organizations that sell $5 tickets to supporters.

It also gave shoppers the opportunity to give back to local nonprofits, the news release continued.

"Giving back to our communities has been a Belk tradition, and our Charity Sale is one of our favorite ways to positively and directly impact each community that we serve," sJessica Graham, Belk vice president, communications said in the release. "The Charity Sale continues to grow and we are grateful to our associates and community partners for their role in making it a success."

Last year, the charity sale raised more than $10 million for charities in its spring and fall sales.

The charity sale supported nonprofits such as March of Dimes, American Cancer Society, Crisis Assistance Ministry, Special Olympics, Teens Do Care, Literacy Council, United Way, Girl Talk International, North Carolina Zoo Society, American Red Cross, animal rescue organizations, local school athletic and scholastic organizations and numerous local churches.
