Fayette County Sheriff's Deputies and investigators with the National Park Service are looking into a death that happened in the Thurmond area on Wednesday, May 8.
According to officials with the Fayette County Sheriff's Office, a person was killed while apparently trying to steal copper. The incident happened four miles up Beury Mountain, above Thurmond. Dispatchers said that emergency responders were dispatched at around 10:33 a.m.
When Rangers and Deputies arrived they found a body tangled up in a high-voltage power line. Deputies believe that the victim and another person were trying to steal copper by shooting down the power lines with a rifle. The victim apparently touched a live power line and was electrocuted. The victim has not been identified, but deputies said that he is a resident of Fayette County.
The second man, Charles Raymond Norris, 22, of Oak Hill was arrested. He is charged with attempt to commit a felony, conspiracy to commit a felony and disruption of a public utility. There is no word on his bond.
