Once-quiet country road now seeing its share of crime

Posted: Updated:

Joe Whorley has spent all his 59 years here on Simmons Creek Road in Belle.

He says residents used to meet to talk about community issues.

"We canceled that community watch, because actually, we felt, we didn't need it," says Whorley, keeping one eye on me, and the other on his grandchildren who are playing nearby.

Neighbors point to three suspicious vacant home fires.

The most recent one was on Friday night, and Belle firefighters say it's suspicious.

Whorley, along with his neighbors, is concerned about other vacant homes on this road.

He's concerned about the community church he helped build.

He's concerned about children.

"No one deserves to go to bed scared."

With all the action this community has seen recently, Whorley says people here are beginning to realize that the times of leaving front doors unlocked are over.

"People are afraid, will I be next? Will my mom be next? Will my children be next?" says Whorley. "We need to start some meetings, get some things figured out."
