It is a tradition at Blenko Glass in Milton to make a special limited edition piece marking West Virginia's birthday.
Saturday morning they will sell 150 signed, numbered vases. People started lining Tuesday to make certain they don't miss out. As of Thursday evening more than 20 people had camping equipment set up and were staying overnight.
"We have to spend the time," said Milton resident Carolyn Shaver. She and her family have been outside since Wednesday night. They started collecting the vases in 2007. Since then they say they have to get there earlier and earlier to get in line. "Our family comes and sees us each night and we sit and talk," Shaver said.
Designer Arlon Bayliss said he decided to make heart shapes a prominent feature on the vase as a tribute to the Mountain State and the people who live there.
"The idea of hearts just seemed really right to me that we could express how West Virginians care for each other," Bayliss said. "It has just been a really appropriate way to celebrate 150 years."
There is an after hours party planned for Thursday night at 7 p.m. There will be a discount on all purchases that night. The limited edition birthday pieces won't be sold until Saturday morning at 8 a.m. Officials said anyone that waits until that time to arrive likely will not get a place in line before the vases are sold out.
The cost of the vases is $160 plus tax.
