We have uncovered new details surrounding a violent inmate who is on the run.

Eric Lamont Jackson has a court ordered work release with South Central Regional Jail. The order came from Family Court Judge Mike Kelley.

Joe Delong is the Executive Director of the Regional Jail Authority, and said there are 50 inmates in the state who have similar court ordered work releases.  He said these releases are not uncommon.

"The courts tell us when to let them go and by the court order, it's determined when they are supposed to report back to us," Delong said.

Delong said court ordered work releases are up to the judge's discretion only. The jails do not have any say in the matter.

"These programs have been somewhat successful in the past but again, that's the judge's discretion, the courts discretion," he said.

Court records show Jackson was arrested twice this year by Charleston Police on domestic battery charges.

Police said he brutally assaulted his girlfriend on multiple occasions, punching her in the face one time and dragging her down the hall another time.

Jackson has been unable to post his $5,000 bond since he was incarcerated in June. Therefore, Judge Kelly signed an order to let Jackson leave jail during the week from 3:30 a.m.-6 p.m. The stipulations of his release said he could leave only to go to work at Labor Ready in Charleston.

State Police got involved when he did not return to SCRJ Monday night.  He has not been seen or heard from since.

Delong said Jackson will most likely face additional criminal charges once he is caught for violating the terms of his court order.
