HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Members of the Huntington Southern States Cooperative are considering a proposal to dissolve the co-op and liquidate the store's assets.

Members are scheduled to vote on the proposed closure Aug. 14. If approved, the store would close at the end of September.

Southern States corporate representatives recommended the store's closure, said Fort Gay cattle farmer Norman Davis, chairman of the Huntington cooperative's board.

"It was recommended strongly to us to approve it," Davis told The Herald-Dispatch. "It's a financial thing they say we can't recoup from. Their recommendation from corporate is that the co-op be dissolved and store closed and assets dispersed, and that's basically it."

The store sells animal feed and other farming products but that's now about 20 percent of its business. Most of its business today is products for urban residents' gardens, lawns and pets.

Davis said that the Huntington store is one 25 that Southern States corporate has proposed to dissolve.

If the store closes, farmers in the region would have to travel to Southern States locations in Point Pleasant or Morehead, Ky., to buy supplies.
