CHARLESTON, WV -

While lawmakers look to limitations on pseudoephedrine to combat its transformation into methamphetamine, one store is stocking an alternative.

Fruth Pharmacy drug stores throughout West Virginia are replacing some of its medications that contain pseudoephedrine with Nexafed.

Pseudoephedrine is used in the manufacturing of meth, and West Virginia law has tried to make it harder to purchase by requiring identification be shown when purchasing the drug and also by limiting the amounts a person can purchase.

According to a news release, Fruth stores are immediately replacing medications with 30mg of pseudoephedrine with Nexafed, which the news release described as "meth-resistant." The release also said the store will replace other products containing pseudoephedrine as soon as possible.

"By making only Nexafed available, patients still get the relief they need, but those seeking PSE for meth production will have to look elsewhere," the release reads.

Nexafed combines nasal-congestion relief in an immediate-release pseudoephedrine product, but it includes a technology that disrupts the conversion of the medicine into meth.

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., was scheduled to talk about the new product Aug. 27 at a Charleston Fruth location.

Fruth Pharmacy has 27 store locations and has been in business for more than 60 years in both Ohio and West Virginia.
