Kanawha County is experiencing an increase in the number of people who are homeless. That's why several groups and organizations joined forces on Wednesday to host an event called "Without a Home: What You Can Do to Help People Who are Homeless in Your Community" at the Kanawha County Public Library.
Panelists from the Covenant House and other community organizations led the discussion about homelessness. The goal was to leave with specific ways you can help those in your community who are in need. Ellen Allen, the executive director of Covenant House, explains it begins with knowledge. "Have a better understanding of the resources available in this community, in this city that reach out and help the homeless. Whether it's through donations, food donations, through volunteerism or clothing donations, there's actually a pretty significant infrastructure within our city that reaches out to people in need."
Other participating organizations include Manna Meal, WV Coalition Against Domestic Violence, YWCA, Roark Sullivan Lifeway Center, WV Office of Economic Opportunity and the Religious Coalition for Community Renewal. People who attended were asked to bring a donation of toiletry items to the distributed to local shelters.
