Huntington Police Department (HPD) will be hiring 5 new officers.
HUNTINGTON, WV -
Huntington Police Department (HPD) will be hiring 5 new officers. The new positions will become available thanks to a $625,000 grant the department received from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Community Oriented Police Services (COPS) grant applications submitted numbered well over 1700. HPD's Chief Holbrook says the grant was one of only 263 awarded to police agencies across the country.
In the selection process there were 3 priority areas for consideration: School Resource Officers to minimize violence in the schools, hiring of Military Veterans, and Homicide and Gun Violence. Applicant police agencies were required to demonstrate efforts established in problem solving, partnerships and organizational transformation.
According to Chief Holbrook, HPD has a proven track record of establishing innovative solutions and creating community partnerships.
The addition of 5 officers will increase police staffing to a level that was last present in the 1970s.
