MSHA hands out more than 200 citations in August

Posted: Updated:

Federal mining regulators issued more than 210 citations during August impact inspections.

The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration says it also issued 23 orders following inspections at nine coal mines and five other mines.

MSHA issued 36 citations and 10 orders at JJ&E Coal Corp.'s Horse Creek Mine No. 2 in McDowell County, W.Va.

The mine operator was cited for violating roof support, ventilation, electrical and surface regulations. An imminent danger order was issued at the time of the inspection and production was allowed to resume Aug. 13.

The inspections began in 2010 after a mine explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia that killed 29 coal miners.

Since then MSHA has conducted 656 inspections and issued 11,002 citations and 1,019 orders.
