A shelter in place was lifted following a leak at a chemical plant in South Charleston, WV.

The shelter in place was ordered for people who live between Clearon Corp. and the west end of South Charleston's city limits.  Clearon Corp. is located on 95 MacCorkle Avenue SW in South Charleston, including the Spring Hill area.  North Charleston and Dunbar were added to the shelter in place shortly after South Charleston.

Metro 911 dispatchers were reporting a "major emergency" called in just before 9 a.m. Oct. 2 from Clearon Corp. in South Charleston.  Kanawha County officials say they have activated the Emergency Operations Center for the leak.

County Commissioner Kent Carper says the spill resulted in a small fire inside the plant, along with a chlorine gas cloud that hovered over the western part of the county.

Clearon indicated to Metro 911 that the chemical release was chlorinated dry bleach.  According to officials on the scene, the chemical appears to be moving west.  Emergency management officials have been evaluating the situation, according to Metro 911.

A technician has been dispatched to monitor the situation, and employees have been evacuated, but the situation "appears to be stable," according to Metro 911, and officials will continue to monitor the situation.
