River and Rail Bakery in Huntington, WV offers up free food to furloughed federal workers
HUNTINGTON, WV -
A popular lunch spot for federal employees in Huntington offered free meals to those customers and their families on Wednesday since they are currently out of a job. River and Rail Bakery is a favorite among many employees of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Huntington.
This week the owner announced that any furloughed federal employee would eat free on Wednesday until 3 p.m. The meal included brats, sauerkraut, peppers, onions, and potatoes with grilled beer cheddar bread. The only was catch was having to show his or her work badge. The offer was extended to families of a furloughed worker as well.
The owner said the employees have supported her business since it opened two years ago, and now she wants to support them. "They stop in and buy coffee in the morning on their way to work. They stop and buy bread on their way home. They're important to us, and we want them to know that we support them," said Kim Baker, owner of the River and Rail Bakery.
Also, as part of the furlough special, all other customers could get any meal for $5.
