A man is accused of physically abusing and threatening to kill a young child relative in Kanawha County, WV.
State Police arrested Paul Sowards Tuesday night.
According to court documents, Sowards beat the 7-year-old boy while he was babysitting him. The victim's mother contacted troopers after the incident, court records show.
The boy suffers from a disorder that causes him to lash out and have uncontrollable behavior, according to the criminal complaint.
The mother dropped the boy off at a home on Newhouse Drive on October 3 before she went to the hospital for surgery, troopers said. While at the home, Sowards and another woman held the boy down while he hit the victim with a belt, troopers said. Sowards also grabbed a gun during the assault and told the boy he was going to kill him and watch him die, troopers said.
Investigators said the victim had injuries consistent with someone who had been beaten.
Sowards has been charged with child abuse resulting in injury, domestic battery, and brandishing. He's in the South Central Regional Jail.
