13News has learned that Keith Richards, 31, was pronounced dead at Cabell Area Memorial Hospital today.

Richards was the reported intruder at a home in Portsmouth, Ohio on Sunday, October 13, 2013.


The man who was shot during an alleged home invasion in Portsmouth, OH is now listed in critical condition at Cabell Huntington Hospital according to hospital officials.

The shooting happened at a home in the 1000 block of 23rd Street around 9:30 p.m.on Sunday, October 13, 2013.

Portsmouth Police say Keith Richards, 31, received life threatening injuries after he was shot by a family member of the deceased homeowner.

13 News learned that a family member was in the house when they saw Richards breaking in through a back window. They say they warned Richards to get out of the house before shooting. Police say they are treating the case as self defense under Ohio's Castle Law.

Authorities also believe Richards, who is from Portsmouth, is a suspect in several burglaries in the north end of town that occurred over the past two weeks.


Officers with the Portsmouth Police Department say a man was shot by a homeowner in Portsmouth, OH.

Officers say the shooting happened at a home on 23rd Street at 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Officers say they do not believe the homeowner and intruder know each other. Officers say the intruder was taken to an out of town hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The conditions and names of the suspect and victim are not being released at this time.
