Ohio University students react to alleged sexual assault near campus

Athens police are investigating an alleged sexual assault at Ohio University that took place over the weekend.
A 20-year-old student contacted police Sunday and said she was raped on South Court Street. To make the case more complicated, the public sex act had been captured on camera and shared on several social media platforms.
"I have never seen anything like that go down in the streets, especially here in Athens," said Elise Numrich, a freshman at the university.
Twitter and Instagram play a big part in students' lives, but many say they were still shocked at how fast news can spread.
"It started with one picture on Twitter and then it went viral," said Sarah Hughes, who learned about the incident through the social media site.
Ohio University sociology professor Cindy Anderson says many times society tends to believe that kids are growing wilder, but that's not necessarily the case.
"We do capture more of their negative and deviant behaviors on social media, but I'm sure that was happening 40 years ago too," she said.
Although the investigation is still ongoing, students say they've already learned some important lessons.
"They just need to be more careful and more sensitive about what they are doing," said Hughes. "Watch what you are drinking and who you are hanging around."
