Fairview football program forfeits 19 games, to miss 2013 playoffs

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) handed down sanction to Fairview High School.

According to a news release on KHSAA's website, Fairview has been sanctioned for violation of Bylaw 3 and Bylaw 4. Bylaw 3 concerns maximum number of years for players and Bylaw four concerns enrollment requirement from players.

During an internal investigation, Fairview Independent Schools found that a student-athlete enrolled at the high school without a full examination of past enrollment.  Allowing the student to enroll violated the bylaws three and four.  According to the release, the student participated in sports for over year.

The release also says the violation put the KHSAA's insurance policy in jeopardy.

The KHSAA accepted penalties proposed by Fairview Independent Schools.  The school will forfeit all games in the 2012 season and the first four games of the 2013 season.  The football program will also be placed on probation until 2017 and will pay a $5,000 fine.  The school will also return all playoff trophies earned during the 2012 season.

The KHSAA also added several penalties.  The school will not be allowed to participate in official activities (practice, competition, and etc.) until the first allowable day in the 2014 season.  Fairview will not be allowed to participate in the 2013 playoffs and their second place finish will be removed.  All championships from the 2012 season will also be vacated.

In addition to those penalties, an assistant commissioner of the KHSAA will work with the superintendent of Fairview Independent Schools to ensure policies are developed and implemented to bring the program into line with KHSAA bylaws.

Fairview Independent Schools Superintendent Bill Musick said, "We as a staff at Fairview Schools accept the responsibility for what has transpired. Neither the Fairview Schools nor Fairview High School has any intention on appealing this decision as our sole focus is moving forward from this situation with renewed focus and energy on managing a fully compliant athletic program."
