WV State University hosts GEAR UP's student leadership conference
INSTITUTE, WV -
West Virginia State University hosted a high school student leadership conference on Thursday. More than 500 students from 10 counties visited the Institute campus for the fourth annual GEAR UP academy.
GEAR UP is a federally funded grant program coordinated by the state Higher Education Policy Commission. It stresses the importance of earning two or four-year degrees after high school and provides students with resources to help them achieve those degrees.
Participants heard speeches from West Virginia State President Brian Hemphill and Higher Education Policy Commission Chancellor Paul Hill. They also helped build science kits to take back to elementary school students in their communities. "I know I wasn't exposed to science like I would have been," said Leah Harrell, a WVSU volunteer. "I'm incredibly grateful to be here and actually go into the medical field in the future. I'm excited to influence some kids in the same way and give them the same opportunity that I have."
