As Appalachian coal production continues its drastic decline, West Virginia’s coal-producing counties are  not only losing people as lifelong residents are forced to flee their homes in order to find work, but in many cases, they’re also relinquishing millions of dollars from their budgets.

As Appalachian coal production continues its drastic decline, West Virginia’s coal-producing counties are  not only losing people as lifelong residents are forced to flee their homes in order to find work, but in many cases, they’re also relinquishing millions of dollars from their budgets.

Rep. David McKinley, R-W.Va., and West Virginia University plan to host an energy forum at 10 a.m. Dec. 9 at WVU.

The second-ever event of its kind is open to the public and will feature lawmakers and industry leaders as well as energy experts who will discuss the country's energy needs. The two-hour forum is expected to discuss how current and proposed energy policies are affecting the economic climate of the United States.

The first forum took place in August 2012 and included U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., as well as Brett Harvey, the CEO of Consol Energy at Tim Carr, WVU's Marshall Miller Professor of Geology.
