As Appalachian coal production continues its drastic decline, West Virginia’s coal-producing counties are  not only losing people as lifelong residents are forced to flee their homes in order to find work, but in many cases, they’re also relinquishing millions of dollars from their budgets.

PRICHARD, WV -

Full service was restored on the Norfolk Southern mainline track through Wayne County at 10 a.m. Nov. 21.

The railroad had shut down its mainline track through Wayne County while repair crews worked on a 40-foot section that was washed out by a weekend storm. One of the two lines was placed back in partial service on Nov. 19 until repairs could be completed.

The washout occurred about six miles from Kenova near the site of the Prichard intermodal facility. One of two lines along the Big Sandy River washed out, and the other was shut down temporarily while repairs were underway.

The track is part of the Heartland Corridor intermodal route and is heavily used for coal and general merchandise shipments.
