FRANKFORT, Ky.(AP) - Kentucky's first archeryand crossbow season for black bears has ended, and the state says hunters mettheir quota of 10 bears during the nine-day season.
Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources bear program coordinator StevenDobey says in addition to the quota being met, bears were killed outside thetraditional bear zone of Harlan, Letcher, Pike and Bellcounties. The zone was expanded to 16 counties this year.
Four bears were killed in Letcher County,two in Perry Countyand one each in Harlan, Pike, Leslie and Wayne counties. Four were females, andsix were killed with a crossbow. The agency says the largest bear was a375-pound male in Wayne County.
The modern firearm season runs Dec. 14 to 16.
