The Moorefield man who threatened the White House more than a year ago has been sentenced in U.S. District Court in Elkins to 10 months in prison.

U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld II said 46-year-old Patrick S. Crites, charged with transmitting threatening communications in interstate commerce in November 2012, was remanded to the custody of U.S. marshals Dec. 19, pending assignment to a federal penal institution.

Crites had admitting to sending a threatening email to the White House.

Court records indicate authorities had traced the message, sent from Crites' email account, to a computer terminal at the Moorefield Public Library in Hardy County. He told Secret Service agents who came to question him a few days later that he was angry and having a bad day when he sent it.

Ihlenfeld said the case was prosecuted by Criminal Chief Shawn A. Morgan and, because the threat was directed at the White House, was investigated by the U.S. Secret Service.
