Mike Plante rarely misses a workout at the YMCA in Charleston, WV. He said he started trying to lost weight so that he would be around for his children. But 94lbs later he views his healthier lifestyle as a personal investment.
"It took me probably about 6 months of forcing myself to come to the gym but once I got past that it is something I look forward to," Plante said. "I don't want to miss working out. I feel bad when I miss coming to the gym."
With the help of YMCA trainer Brandon Walters, Plante has remained on track. He still wants to lose another 25 or 30lbs.
"If you want to make a change in your life it has to be small and incremental," Walters said. He said an individuals chances for success are better if they make small changes and then incorporate other changes over time. He said to have a specific goal and a plan for how you will reach that goal. Write down you daily progress. He said it is also crucial to have a support system and people who will hold you accountable.
"A lot of people set those goals and never achieve them because there has never been a system in place," Walters said. "That system starts small and builds over the course of a year."
He said you should not expect to lose more than one pound each week.
"There is no magic pill or video in a box," Plante said. "The key is just working hard and eating right."
