    The West Virginia Department of Agriculture is responsible for monitoring and regulating meat and poultry production in the state, monitoring and protecting crops and aspects of the state’s food supply, training farmers, promoting agriculture and coming up with new agricultural programs for the state.

The West Virginia Legislature will be in full-swing Jan. 8, but members aren't wasting any time getting to the point.

A public hearing on the proposed use of federal block grant funding for community development services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8 in the House Finance Committee Room, 460 M.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the first meeting of the 2014 regular session for the House of Delegates and Senate Finance committees.

"This is a federally required hearing, but on that both legislators and members of the public find very informative," said Brent Boggs, House Finance Chairman. "This federal funding helps state agencies provide services that are critical to the well being of West Virginia children and low-income individuals seeking to improve their circumstances."

The hearing also will be live streamed via the Legislature's website, www.legis.state.wv.us/live.cfm.

- Community Mental Health Services

- Maternal and Child Health

- Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment

- Child Care and Development

- Energy Assistance

- Social Services
