Study maps Ohio nonprofits with government funds

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A study commissioned by a state office shows thousands of Ohio nonprofit groups got a combined $1.6 billion in state and federal money in 2011 and 2012.

The Columbus Dispatch ( ) reports the study, called "Mapping Ohio's Compassion," puts that title into practice through an interactive online map of food banks, hospitals, youth centers and other nonprofits and the services they offer. It includes information on more than 12,000 nonprofit agencies.

The governor's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives used the study to learn more about the provided services and where there might be gaps. The report includes recommendations for Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sik).

A Kasich spokesman calls the report an initial step. He says sharing the results and best practices can help nonprofits make better funding decisions.
