In conjunction with Black History Month, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is offering a special exhibit, "The United States Colored Troops & The Spirit of Freedom," throughout February.
The exhibit will focus on the African American troops who served in the military during the American Civil War. An open house is scheduled from 2-4 p.m. Feb. 2 on the second floor of the John Brown Museum on Shenandoah Street in Harpers Ferry.
More than 200,000 soldiers of the U.S. Colored troops served from 1861 to 1865. Visitors will find out about African Americans from Jefferson and Berkeley counties who served in the military, including West Virginia's Martin Delany, the only black officer to receive the rank of major during the Civil War.
