A sex offender from Utah who moved to West Virginia last year faces up to 10 years in prison for failing to register and update his registration.

Jonah L. Begay, 38, of Wheeling, entered the guilty plea recently before U.S. District Judge Frederick P. Stamp Jr.

U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld III said Began, previously convicted in Utah District Court of attempted sexual abuse of a child, is required to register as a sex offender under both state and federal law. The Utah conviction involved a 10-year-old, he said.

Begay was taken into custody after police received reports in November of an individual being aggressive and appeared to be intoxicated near a Wheeling middle school.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen L. Vogrin and investigated by Wheeling police, U.S. marshals and West Virginia State Police.
