New details have been released in an officer-involved shooting in Dunbar, WV.
According to Dunbar Police Chief Jess Bailes, three officers went to the home of Rick Wilcox to serve a domestic violence protective order Thursday night.
Police were working with Karen Wilcox, his wife, throughout the day on domestic violence issues, Bailes said. Karen went to the police department in the evening and told officers her husband was home. She wanted them to serve him with a DVP order she filed at the Kanawha County Courthouse earlier in the day, he said.
Officers had reason to believe Wilcox might be violent towards police, Bailes said. They were also aware there was a gun in the home, he said.
When officers tried to serve the DVP order, Wilcox locked the door and went back into the house, in which family members gave police a key to get inside.
Family members warned police Wilcox might be armed with a gun, they said. When police went inside, they chased Wilcox down. During the scuffle, Wilcox shot himself in the chest, police said. He later died at the hospital.
No one else was injured.
Bailes said the officers have not been put on administrative leave. Based on the evidence and the fact that Wilcox shot himself, Bailes did not see a reason to place them on administrative leave, he said.
The Kanawha County Sheriff's Department is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.
