WVSU basketball teams set to end an era at Fleming Hall court
West Virginia State University's Fleming Hall
INSTITUTE, WV -
For just over seven decades Fleming Hall has been the only place basketball games have been played. After Tuesday's games, both teams move to the new Convocation Center at Fleming Hall beginning Saturday.
"Tradition and history, said WVSU men's basketball coach Bryan Poore.
"Running the bleaches for condition purposes. Sometimes we would run some much we'd think we never pick up a basketball, said Debra Anderson-Conliffe, former WVSU women's basketball and Department of Health and Human Performance department chair and associate professor.
"The history inside this building is just enormous," said Poore.
One of the quirks at Fleming Hall's basketball is that the court is the dimensions is suppose to be 94 feet, but only falls at 86 feet presenting some positives.
"When we press and run you don't have much to cover as much of the court," said Poore.
Festivities kick-off with dedication and opening of the new Convocation Center at Fleming Hall on Friday. Former State player and the first African American NBA player Earl Lloyd will be on hand. Saturday both men's and women's basketball team play their first games at the new facility.
