West Virginia leaders are taking a closer look at scams in the state in honor of National Consumer Protection Week.
Thousands of consumer complaints come into the Consumer Protection Division of the West Virginia Attorney Generals Office every year.
They just released a list of the most common consumer complaints from 2013. Topping the list is promotions. Things like robo calls, telemarketing, or online solicitation.
Bad car deals take the second spot. West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said while most dealerships do the right thing, that is not always the case.
"You do get some people that engage in some shady transactions and they're trying to lure people in and maybe be deceptive."
Credit and debt collectors complaints are third on the list.
"If someone keeps calling you and harassing you on the phone, you do have the right to say stop calling me," said Morrisey.
Morrisey said you can protect yourself from most complaints by researching a company before you interact with them. He also said you should never give out your personal information to anyone you do not know.
Here are the other top consumer complaints for 2013.
