As Appalachian coal production continues its drastic decline, West Virginia’s coal-producing counties are  not only losing people as lifelong residents are forced to flee their homes in order to find work, but in many cases, they’re also relinquishing millions of dollars from their budgets.

FirstEnergy recently presented a donation to St. Joseph's Foundation of Buckhannon.

The donation will go toward renovation of the hospital's chapel along with the renovation of a wing of the hospital to become a new skilled nursing facility.

The donation was presented as part of the foundation's annual end-of-the-year appeal.

"We sincerely thank FirstEnergy for their generosity to our foundation," said Patricia Lake, executive director of the foundation. "It is through this type of support that we are able to assist the hospital in ensuring that they can continue to provide quality care to our community."

The hospital chapel honors the Pallottine Sisters and provides a place of solace. The new skilled nursing facility will provide therapy on a short-term basis for anyone who needs additional care after a hospital stay.
