Musical trio ushers in Davis & Elkins College spring Recital Series

Ushering in Davis & Elkins College spring Recital Series on April 27 is Nina Assimakopoulos, Carol Beall and Hope Koehler.

The trio will perform a concert at 2 p.m. in the Great Hall of Halliehurst with Assimakopoulos on flute, Beall on piano and mezz-soprano Koehler, featuring the impressionist musical works of Debussy, Faure, Gaubert and Caplet.

Assimakopoulos is an internationally acclaimed flutist and Altus Performing Artist who has commissioned and premiered more than 83 works for flute and recorded four solo CDs. She has received numerous awards and prizes, and has performed with the Munich City Opera, Bavarian Radio Symphony Academy Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, New Hampshire Symphony Orchestra and Toledo Symphony Orchestra. At West Virginia University, Assimakopoulos is a flute professor and has studied with Peter Lloyd and Paul Meisen. 

Beall is a nationally certified piano teacher and Community Music faculty member in Morgantown, W.Va.  She is an active collaborative artist, frequently performing with WVU faculty, students and guests and has performed as a soloist with Baylor University Symphony Orchestra, Eastman Wind Ensemble, Memphis State Wind Ensemble, Fairmont Community-College Orchestra, Illinois Wesleyan Wind Ensemble and West Virginia University Symphony Orchestra.

Her CD recordings have been released by Cambria, West Virginia University Press Parma Records.

Koehler will perform vocals for the concert and is a regular performer and featured soloist with American Spiritual Ensemble, a group that performs throughout the world with a mission to keep the American Negro Spiritual alive.

Koehler's voice can be heard on "The Lily of the Valley," "Swing Low," "Sweet Chariot," "The Lass from the Low Countree," "Lost Melodies," "The Spirit of the Holidays" and "The Spirituals," a DVD recorded with American Spiritual Ensemble.

Although admission is free and open to the public, it is recommended that tickets be reserved in advance online at by emailing, or calling the D&E Box Office at 304-637-1255. Graceland will also offer a 10 percent discount on brunch for those who have ticket in hand.
